Adidas to open first high-street outlet

Adidas is to make its UK retail debut with plans to launch an Originals-branded standalone store in London. The opening will pit it against rival Nike's famous Niketown store.

The German sportswear giant is examining a number of potential sites in the capital with a view to opening a flagship store sometime next year.

Originals stores are already open in Berlin, Tokyo, New York, Seoul and Osaka.

Adidas believes the launch of an Originals-branded shop in the UK, which will sell its eponymous clothing range, will help cement consumers' association with the brand and challenge Nike, which it hopes to overtake by 2006.

The company is understood to be considering at least one site near the Niketown Oxford Street store, but declined to comment on its plans.

Last week, Adidas reported a 7% rise in European sales to 1.657bn euros for the first half of 2003. Sales in the TaylorMade-adidas Golf division fell 18% globally in the same period.

Meanwhile, the company is reported to be planning to offer David Beckham a lifelong ambassadorial contract.
