Activists to target public televisions as part of TV Turnoff week

LONDON - Adbusters activitists are promising to take to the streets armed with devices that can switch off a television from 45 feet away, as part of TV Turnoff week, which begins today.

Adbusters, the social activist organisation, has been selling devices known as TV B-Gone through its , along with , which campaigns against the dominance of television. The device is a small, universal remote control that can be used to switch off almost any television, and costs 拢14.99.

Adbusters is also organising "jamming groups" in cities across the world, to promote the cause of TV Turnoff week, which runs until May 1. Events will include a pub crawl in Washington DC, where drinkers will turn off televisions in pubs.

White Dot is contributing with a series of posters that can be printed out, which the group encourages people to stick on screens of public televisions.

The TV Turnoff event started in the US, but 10 other countries, including the UK, now participate. It encourages people to switch off their televisions for a whole week and look at other options that life has to offer.

While the official organisation takes a voluntary approach to the effort, Adbusters is pushing for guerrilla action against the growing presence of televisions in public spaces.

Along with the TV B-Gone, the group has in the past smashed up televisions and performed street theatre in an attempt to make people think about the dominance of the "idiot box".
