ABCs show growth for celebrity gossip titles

The public's thirst for celebrity gossip shows little sign of abating with this week's magazine circulation figures likely to show continued growth in the sector.

ABC figures for the January to June period are expected to show IPC's Now maintaining its position as the market- leader with further year-on-year growth. Emap's Heat is also thought to have posted a significant rise of 20,000 while its sister title Closer is expected to post a respectable first ABC of 350,000.

The women's glossies market has suffered from the effects of a downturn in international travel because travel purchases are crucial to the health of the sector.

In a difficult market, IPC's InStyle is predicted to post double-digit growth, while Conde Nast's Glamour is expected to extend its lead over The National Magazine Company's Cosmopolitan with an ABC close to 600,000.

Vogue is said to have maintained its position while Elle is likely to have seen its circulation fall.

In a lacklustre men's monthlies market, Loaded has suffered a decline in circulation. The market leader, Emap's FHM, is expected to maintain that position. Industry sources said that IPC would not be happy with Loaded's performance. NatMags' Esquire will post a small increase.

On a more positive note, the soap titles are expected to boost their circulations. The titles, including All About Soap and Soap Life, are riding on the back of the success of improved storylines and audiences for soaps, such as Coronation Street.

After a period of flux, the music magazines are bouncing back, reflecting a decline in interest in club music. IPC's NME will post strong growth while Uncut is expected to show a rise that will put it among the top five risers in the whole survey.
