Abbey to shelve extra Costa bars

Abbey has cancelled plans to open Costa Coffee concessions in a further 27 branches as it reviews its retail strategy. The alliance saw the cafe chain open outlets in 23 Abbey branches. Separate to the review, Costa Coffee has decided to close eight of its Abbey outlets, citing 'business reasons'.

Abbey is reassessing the look and feel of its branch network, including layout and its positioning on the high street, as part of its campaign to 'Turn banking on its head'.

Abbey opened its first new-look branch incorporating a Costa Coffee cafe in the summer of 2000 in Barnet. The cafe concept was created by First Partnership.

Abbey has a partnership with Homebase that gives the bank a presence in some of the DIY retailer's outlets. This deal has not been affected by the review.
