8.5 million tune in to watch Queen Vic go up in flames

An average of 8.4 million people watched Phil Mitchell set fire to the Queen Vic pub in a dramatic episode of BBC One soap 'EastEnders' last night, according to unofficial overnight figures.

The recent Mitchell storyline came to a head in last night’s dramatic show, which had an average audience of 8.44 million between 7.30pm and 8pm, a 41% share of the TV watching audience.

The average audience was up 13.8% from the 7.42 million who watched ‘EastEnders’ at the same time last Thursday (2 September) but below this year’s average audience of 8.5 million.

ITV1’s ‘Coronation Street’ was watched by an average audience of 7.8 million people between 8.30pm and 9pm last night, a 33.6% share of the TV watching audience.

The penultimate episode of 'Ultimate Big Brother' on Channel 4 was watched by an average of 2.21 million viewers across Channel 4 and Channel 4+1.

The average audience since the show started on 25 August is 2.6 million while the average audience across this series of ‘Big Brother’ and ‘Ultimate Big Brother’ is 2.5 million.
