4oD expands download range with FX deal

LONDON - 4oD, Channel 4's on-demand service, has struck a deal with FX, the Fox-owned entertainment channel, that could see US hits such as '24' and 'Nip/Tuck' available to download from the broadcaster's website.

The deal, which follows others with National Geographic and Disney-owned ABC, will see a range of programming available to download and watch from November 26 via a dedicated FX-branded area on 4oD.

Fox will supply 4oD with 30 hours of programming a month in a deal brokered by digital entertainment specialists Huge Entertainment.

The service will launch with comedies 'Kenny vs Spenny', 'The Newsroom' and 'The Nominees'; new sci-fi drama 'Charlie Jade', 'Murder by The Book', FX's first original co-production 'Urban Legends' and 'Texas SWAT'.

Rod Henwood, new business director at Channel 4, said: "We launched 4oD with the ambition of becoming an aggregator of great on-demand content so I'm delighted to announce the addition of another quality content partner.

"FX offers a distinctive brand of premium entertainment that will complement our existing offering. 4oD will continue to grow its already significant user base, both through Channel 4's outstanding programmes and through carriage contracts like this one."

4oD was recently crowned the most popular TV service on the internet in a report conducted by Continental Research.

The study attributed Channel 4's lead to an early launch date, which has given it the edge over rivals such as ITV.

According to the report, 4oD is used by 25% of internet TV viewers, while the BBC iPlayer is used by 16%.

Sky leads ITV in the online stakes, with 12% of internet TV users watching Sky Anytime compared to 10% using ITV on Demand.
