3 seeks marketing chief for awareness initiative

3, the UK's only 3G mobile phone network, is looking for a marketing supremo as it prepares a 12-month brand awareness drive.

The search follows the sideways shift of current marketing director Graeme Oxby to the new role of product development and propositions chief, as first revealed by Marketing in May (26 May 2004).

3 chief operating officer Gareth Jones told Marketing that potential candidates need a breadth of marketing experience across brand-building, advertising, PR and sponsorship.

It had been wrongly claimed that Julian Hough, business development director at 3's agency WCRS, had been brought in to handle marketing and communications on an interim basis. Jones said this was not the case and Hough was still working on the brand at WCRS.

He added that 3 was working out a brand implementation strategy, which would include increased sponsorship activity. But he said it was unlikely that the brand would seek a major UK sports sponsorship property such as a Premiership football team in the near future.
