3 launches ad-funded mobile content

LONDON - Mobile media firm 3 is launching its first advertising-funded mobile content offering.

Customers will have free access to previously paid-for content via the Planet 3 portal. The launch of ad-funded content means 3 will increase its free video content to include news, comedy, celebrity gossip, animations and film. This will sit alongside existing content such as music and mobile games.

The service will be supported by personalised advertising from major brands.

Clients confirmed for the April launch include Microsoft and Unilever.

Brands will be able to buy advertising space based on audience demographics. Users will be asked to submit basic data to improve targeting. The advertising can be frequency regulated, preventing wasted impressions and advertising fatigue.

Rhythm New Media will be responsible for sales of the advertising inventory and ad-serving.

3 UK’s marketing director, Graeme Oxby, said: “By introducing advertising supported content we can massively increase the range of video clips available. Ad supported content is going to be an important part of the mobile world going forward.”

Meanwhile, Nokia launched two platforms to connect advertisers and publishers with mobile yesterday. Nokia Ad Service is a mobile ad network and platform to deploy, manage and optimise campaigns. Nokia Advertising Connector enables publishers and other third parties to deliver targeted ads to mobile devices.
