The individual who influenced me the most during my early days is Ambrose McGinn, former market-ing director at Abbey National.
He possessed a wonderful combination of intelligent decision-making and a real enthusiasm for the job – a mixture of talents that had people running through walls for him.
He would appear incredibly relaxed under pressure and was well-suited to the cut and thrust of television interviews. Dozens of individuals that passed through Abbey during his time still refer to him with kindness and respect.
I particularly remember a night out at a comedy club. The comedian quickly worked out where we were from and who the senior manager was. He ribbed Ambrose mercilessly all evening, which Ambrose took in his stride with a broad grin.
